Primary Purpose:
Develops and implements effective counseling techniques for students receiving special education
services as determined by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee and to support
student progress in the areas of academics, personal, and social growth.
* Texas Teacher Certification with endorsement or specialization in Special Education
* Master’s degree in the field of education or related field required
* 3 years successful teaching experience
* Valid Counseling certification Texas Education Agency
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Competently administer required formal and informal assessment instruments
2. Collect, interpret, and report student assessment data and other reports as required
3. Use data appropriately for assisting in student placement and instructional programs as needed
4. Provide direct or consultative counseling to individuals or groups of students with disabilities as
determined by the ARD committee
5. Provide crisis counseling and consultation as needed
6. Maintain confidentiality of counseling sessions and information except when the student’s
condition requires intervention
7. Communicate effectively with school personnel and parents as appropriate for student needs
8. Prepare for and participate in ARD committee meetings
9. Assist in classroom and/or behavior management planning for students receiving special
education services
10. Maintain counseling logs and participate in Random Moment in Time Study and SHARS on-line
billing system as required by district
11. Assist with functional behavior assessments for students with disabilities
12. Assist with behavior intervention plans for students with disabilities
13. Assist with staff training for implementation of student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) or other
training as required
14. Communicate with all parties in a professional manner
15. Cooperate effectively in the role of counselor with appropriate agencies, community groups and
school organizations
16. Support programs and actions that facilitate a positive, caring climate for learning
17. Utilize appropriate data information systems and records necessary for attainment of the
special education department’s mission and overall school improvement efforts18. Plan, conduct or assist with staff development regarding special education issues
19. Participate in staff development training programs, workshops, and other training as
20. Follow all state and federal guidelines, board policies and district procedures as required

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written), interpret policies and procedures, reason, read,
understand verbal instructions, analyze, differentiate, coordinate, compile, instruct, and maintain
emotional control.

Physical Demands:
Ability to lift and/or carry moderate weight, sit, stand, walk, reach, repetitive hand motions, hear, speak,
and frequent travel within the cooperative/districts and occasionally outside the cooperative boundaries
and/or county. May experience prolonged and irregular works hours and work with frequent
