Job Title: Head Volleyball Coach   Exemption Status/Test: Exempt

Reports to: Athletic Director / Principal   Pay Grade: Teacher

Dept./School: Athletics/High School  


Primary Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Athletics and the general supervision of the building principal, the volleyball coach organizes, coordinates, and promotes a comprehensive program of volleyball instruction that is designed to meet the needs and interest of the school community.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree

Valid Texas teaching certificate

Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate

Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements

Special Knowledge/Skills:

General knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures

Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules

Specific knowledge of subjects assigned

General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong organizational, communications and interpersonal skills

Strong problem solving skills

Experience:

Head coaching experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instruction

1. Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned

2. Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship

3. Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes

Program Management

4. Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis

5. Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials and facilities

6. Keep informed of and ensure compliance with all UIL rules

7. Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.

8. Work with Director of Athletics to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements

9. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make changes based on findings

10. Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on out-of-town trips

11. Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.

12. Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook

13. Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation

Communication

14. Establish and maintain open lines of communication on vital issues with parents, students, and teachers.

Administration,

15. Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials

16. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required

17. Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program

18. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment

19. Plan, organize, and implement the teaching of fundamentals, strategies, rules, and proper conditioning of the game

20. Plan and coordinate volleyball schedules and in preparing weekly game reports

21. Conduct weekly grade checks on all volleyball players

22. Plan and coordinate volleyball awards Personnel Management

Other

23. Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations

24. Adhere to the district’s safety policies and procedures

25. Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

26. Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned (classroom or office setting)

27. Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance.

28. Other duties as assigned to encourage community and parent involvement.

Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring of coaches and support staff. *

Tools/Equipment Used: Athletic equipment, standard office equipment including computer and peripherals and other instructional equipment; automated external defibrillator (AED); frequent driving may operate school bus

Posture: Sitting; prolonged standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, stooping

Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent physical movements associated with sport; moderate grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension and reaching

Lifting: Frequently light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds)

Environment: Frequent districtwide and statewide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent prolonged and irregular hours

*To meet the executive exemption test, the primary duty must be management and the employee must supervise at least two full-time employees.

29. Attend practice sessions and athletic contests and prepare athletes using protective techniques and devices as needed.

30. Provide emergency or continued care and refer athletes to physician for definitive diagnosis and treatment.

31. Detect and resolve risks to athletes and determine continued participation in athletic events.

32. Develop and establish specific procedures to be carried out in the event of a medical emergency.

33. Provide health care information and counsel and instruct student athletes on subject matter related to athletic training.

34. Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical and paramedical personnel, coaches, and other staff.

Rehabilitation/Reconditioning

35. Plan and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by student athletes.

36. Determine therapeutic goals and objectives for individual athletes, apply therapeutic modalities, and instruct athletes on proper use of exercise equipment.

37. Fit injured athletes with specialized equipment and oversee its use.

38. Evaluate and record rehabilitation progress of athletes. Develop criteria for progression and return to practice and competition.

39. Follow and enforce professional, ethical, and legal parameters regarding use of drugs and therapeutic agents for treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.

Administration

40. Coordinate scheduling of athletic physical examinations and screening.

41. Select, train, and supervise student assistants.

42. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents including medical, accident, and treatment records as required.

43. Maintain an inventory of training supplies and equipment. Requisition additional supplies as needed.

44. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Tools/Equipment Used: Exercise equipment and devices including stationary bike, pulleys, weights, whirlpool, paraffin bath, ultrasound equipment, and cold packs; automated external defibrillator (AED)

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Continual walking; moderate reaching

Lifting: Frequently moderate lifting or carrying (15-44 pounds)

Environment: Work outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather) and inside; exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; frequent districtwide and statewide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent prolonged and irregular hours
